The Family (1987)

1987 · 127 min · Drama

Formal portraits, bookends in this 80-year saga, enclose the central story, which opens with the baptism of Carlo, a baby in his grandfather's lap, and ends with Carlo as a grandfather with a baby in his arms. And never once do we get out of the house, whose rooms provide structure. Comfort or passion? Carlo can't really decide until it's too late.

Directed by Ettore Scola. Starring Vittorio Gassman, Fanny Ardant, Stefania Sandrelli, Andrea Occhipinti and Emanuele Lamaro.

Explore The Family as a constellation

Lyradrift plots The Family as a star at the centre of its own sky, with related films orbiting it as satellites, gathered from TMDB recommendations, shared themes, Wikidata links (same director, writer, series, source material or subject) and closeness of feel, then chosen for the strongest evidence — the closer and brighter a star, the more strongly it is related. Fly to any satellite to make it the new centre and keep exploring.
